British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.
The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and influential overseas."
In December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
