Pat Cummins has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.
"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.
Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
