Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
