Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.
A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
